01 7.3 Fueling Issues
It seems like the truck is running out of fuel when there is just under a quarter on the gauge, it starts off as just a little rough in the idle and then gets progressively worse but doesn't kill the truck. When it gets worse it looses power and will barely move under its own power.
First time I replaced the ICP sensor as that was bad and it seemed to be fixed, but today it did the same thing when the gauge was around the same spot. I got someone to bring fuel and it ran fine after a minute or so of semi rough idle.
It seems that the gauge is off by 1/8 or 1/6, has anyone else experienced this?
There is a foot on the bottom of the fuel pick-up tube that becomes brittle over time and then breaks. When this happens, the overall length of the fuel pick-up tube is shortened by enough that the truck will become starved for fuel even though about 4-8 gallons of fuel remains in the tank which depends on which capacity tank your truck came with. It is not uncommon.
As you have already figured out, don't let the truck get below 1/4 of a tank until you address this.
