When I started my truck the air conditioning fan was dead on Friday. All weekend I would turn the fan on and then off because it was still out. Planned on calling ford service today (Monday) but when I took my wife to work this morning I had condensation on the windshield and put the fan on and still nothing. Getting into traffic I left the fan on. 3 or 4 minutes later the fan came on and has been working.
My '11 had the same issue about 6 months ago, turn the key and sometimes the fan came on and sometimes not. Ended up being a failing fan motor, which I replaced myself. While doing research on the issue others were saying Ford charges around $1k to replace the fan due to having to remove the dash, although I was able to replace it in about 2 hours without removing the dash. It does take patience though, nearly half that time was spent on R&R'n just one of the threee screws that hold the fan in.

Dealer must not be knowledgeable as the Ford Workshop Service DVD states it can be replaced without pulling the dash.
Now, the fan motor speed controller requires the dash to be removed to replace it since it is located on the evap box.
