The fan made from a whole house fan moves a LOT of air, much more than a squirrel cage fan (I have one of those too). You have to restrain it if you have it on casters tho, otherwise it will take off across the yard...
I am not sure what a bubba fan is, but I have built fans out of attic fans. They work ok. Today you can buy a good fan from Lowes or Home Depo for the cost of materials it takes to build one. Now if ya wanna spend some bucks and get a realy good fan go with the Portacool brand they are water coolers and will drop the temp in your shop up to 20 deg. if you live in Arizona or New Mexico (no moisture in that air), in Texas it will only bring it down about 10 deg. Hell 10 deg. is alot when it is 102 in the shade and the humitity is 70%.
I pick up brand new attic fans from garage sales without motors. It is more expensive to buy a replacement motor for a fan than it is to buy a whole new fan. People buy the fan, remove the motor to use on their existing fan, then get rid of the fan itself. Used single speed motors can be found cheap. The attic fans move a LOT more air than those utility fan$ from the home box stores or industrial supply houses. A "bubba" fan can be made for $10.
A tip....Hang one of those bug-zapper lights in your garage. I keep one plugged-in next to the garage door opener motor. Just leave the thing on all the time. In the morning there'll be a pile of dead bugs on the floor. Works for me.
