Cruise Control

My son came back from the pick n pull with the cruise control servo and wiring with brake switch out a 1982 F-150 with a 300 six. He has a tilt column out of a 1986 F-150 with the cruise buttons in the horn pad. My question is, what is involved in putting it in? Is the wiring in his 1981 F-150 compatible? Has anyone done this before and have any advice? Thank!

There is a lot of wiring involved.
The horn has to be re-wired with a relay.

The brake pedal needs a electrical switch added as well as a vacuum dump switch added to the pedal arm.

The speedo cable will have to be swapped out for a shorter cable to the tranny, and speed sensor piece goes on the end of that(around where the steering column comes out of the firewall) and then a short speedo cable goes from there through the firewall to the speedo.

And you will need the cruise brain box that runs it all.

We have all the parts you mentioned, just wondered if the the 81 wiring was compatable with the 82. Is it a plug n play?

The main vehicle wiring harness should be the same so any connectors you need should be in place ready for you to plug into.

The exception to this is when an individual wire harness is used for an accessory - such as if you wanted to add power windows and door locks, the main vehicle harness has the connections but within the doors there is also a short harness that would not be there in a manual window model.

So if there was an individual harnesses used somewhere for cruise control, then you would need to create it. But I can't think of where one would be used for cruise.

This diagram of a 86 model should be very close if not the same as your earlier model truck's cruise system.

I see they use the same brake switch, it just has a tap off wire to the cruise system.

Here's the horn wiring. You will have to figure out if this is plug and play or not. It looks like connector 305 is where it all happens. They use a different colored wire to feed the horns in the cruise setup also.
