are there any of the older ford engines that can be used like 272, 292 etc that would not be too expensive to build and would be good and reliable. I drive my truck almost as a daily driver. It's a 53 f100
Are you going to replace the 350?
I am not a Chevy guy, but it is hard to beat for daily use. To change to another engine/transmission combination would be costly.
My favorite would be a Ford FE big block, it fills that huge engine compartment of the '53.
Yes I want to replace the 350.. maybe it is stupid but I am ones of those who thinks it is a ford and should have a ford Motor. Once I have the rest of the money I need and get the new cab I plan on working on changing the motor when I tear it down. Unless someone here can give me a good reason to keep the 350.
I'm not really a fan of a Chevy in a Ford.. But... It's already there and it works good, right? I wouldn't recommend someone putting a 350 in a 53 but I would leave it as a good driver.
I vote for the 292. There are plenty of performance and dress-up parts available including AC and power steering brackets. A flathead would be correct and is supported well in the after market industry.
Or you could put a flat head v8 in there like came in in the 53 from the factory. They are around and not hard to find. I have my eyes on 2 of them ,One is going to cost 2,000. and the other is 2,500.The 2500. one has 2 carbs and aluminum heads. one is going in my 52 and the other is going in my 53. I have 5 of them myself, but none run .....yet . I like the sound of a flattie with a lope to it.
I would love to have a flat head that is what my truck came from the factory with. But they are very expensive, expensive to rebuild and you just can't walk into an auto parts store and and buy a part.
Pappy Y Blockscan be pretty expensive as well. You could get a 302 or a 351W for cheap. They both will use C4s, C6s and AODs. Would be very reliable power trains and parts are readily available.

No, you are not stupid. I myself would be ashamed to raise the hood with anyone around...
IMO, a correct period Y-BLOCK would be the obvious choice. Was never a flat head aficionado (Fr.).

Not as bad as you would think. There are lots of them out there. Even new blocks are available thanks to the French military. And when you are done it looks and sounds great. A real classic.
Edelbrock makes new Holley 94 carbs, not to mention several intake manifolds for the flathead. An electronic ignition to replace the points. It will be a good and reliable engine with a lot of wow factor.
If money is an issue then a Windsor 302/351 would be a great choice. They are still abundant and reasonably priced. A 292/312, or flattie would be awesome too, but harder to find and can be costly to build. I see parts for both fairly often on craigslist, but you'd get more for less in many cases going the 302/351 route. Look at it this way, you got a 350 Cheby in it now, so going SBF would be an improvement and all Ford.
