I am buying a 1992-1996 F150 with a 5.8L V8 4X4. My question is.... I know there is a difference in the 4X4 systems in the trucks. one is shift on the fly on is not. I am looking into the shift on the fly model is there any problems with this system. Is it less durable than the older stick on the floor type... Thanks for the help.
As far as I know you can shift them all on the fly, just not into low range. Sounds like allot of people have problems with the auto locking hubs though.
No, but I got the manual hubs and a floor shifter because I didn't want to be stuck because of an electrical problem. Go up to search and search for auto locking hubs. You will find many past discussions about this and how people switch auto's over to manuals. Oh and I can shift to 4X4 going 70mph if I wanted even with the floor shifter.
You want a truck with a floor shifter and manual hubs. If it's a floor shifter and auto hubs, thats ok because for about 60 bucks you can swap out the auto hubs for manuals. Don't get a push button 4wd. As long as the hubs are locked you can shift into 4wd at any speed with the floor shift. Just lock the hubs before you get in the truck if you know you're going to need 4wd, it's ok to drive with the hubs locked on the street as long as your not in 4wd.
For me, the 4x4 system on the Ford was the main selling point over Dodge/GM on the pre '97 trucks. I have the floor shift and converted the hubs. Those that want to lift a truck for show like the Dodge solid axle or the CV joint setup on GM/Toyota/newer Ford. Most everyone I know with an electric system has had problems after the warranty expired.
