Question about alternators
I found a thread on a bronco message board about some guy trying to go for a serpentine setup. Looks like he did a lot of junk yard searching, and I don't know if he ever succeeded. I don't want to touch that with a barge pole. I have a 351w EFI engine I used for a mock-up on another car that had one v-belt and one serp belt.
So you've got a Windsor? Is that what we've been talking about all this time? Or is this the 400?
I admit, I wasn't looking at your pics that closely and still have a hard time telling for sure, but if it's a Windsor then all bets are back on!
Some of the 5.0, and all the 5.8 serpentines are fair game for your Windsor in a full-size truck. Plenty of room and plenty of choices.
If you can find yourself a good junkyard Explorer ('98-'01 V8) just grab everything from the front cover on out and you're in the best of all worlds. Even though it was only on the 5.0 engines, with the modular design of the Explorer setup (Ford's last hurrah with the old 5.0) it'll still bolt right on to the 5.8 if I'm not mistaken. I don't remember anyone even having to re-drill a hole to get them to work.
The only compromise you'll have to make for the Explorer (or for most factory serp setups from 5.0's or 5.8's for that matter) is that you'll lose the mechanical fuel pump and need to run an electric. For most of us though, that's not a big deal.
I suppose having to use an Explorer-specific alternator, water pump, power steering, pump, fan and clutch are "compromises" too if you want to look at them that way. But they're really good stuff, so not a bad thing to have to convert.
The Exploder was Fords most compact and and well-designed and convenient serp setup. In a full-size truck, compactness is not near as important as it is in the Early Broncos with less than 2" between the snout of the water pump and the core of the radiator in many cases, but the Exploder is still good stuff.
Similar depth in the '94/'95 Mustang 5.0's too, but not quite as well thought out.
You might have to extend the shroud to better fill the fan, but that might not be an insurmountable issue.
With the Explorer, you can literally change the water pump without removing a single other thing besides the belt itself. All other accessories stay in place.
You would use the Explorer's 4G alternator of course, because it's model specific mounting, but it wires exactly like your 3G and you can still sell the 3G to someone not going serp.
Anyway, maybe you don't have a Windsor in this truck after all. But if you do, factory serpentine is the way to go for belt squeal.
I've only heard of one other person that had squeal with his serpentine. The rest of us (including me) never looked back.
Oh, and the 18" zillion blade cooling fan and clutch are a thing of powerful beauty too by the way.
And that never hurts in our trucks either!
One of these days I'm going to try to make one fit my 400...

There are a lot of crank pulley combos for sale on ebay. Most of the stock stamped types have varying diameters. The ones that have equal 2nd and 3rd diameters are for other engine families, like Windsor. Unless someone can vouch that parts are interchangeable. I don't know if a Cleveland 4-bolt crank pulley in interchangeable with a Windsor 4-bolt crank pulley. Even so, what are the chances the groove offsets are the same?
Here is one I found that might work.

If you find one and can get two, let me know... I'll buy one.
I haven's found any suitable aftermarket pulleys for the 400.
The diameters of the front two are the same. The width of the grooves look the same, but the depth of the V looks deeper in the front groove. Did Ford use different width belts on some cars?

If you're lucky, they'll sit at the same diameter and you could be good to go.
I don't know if long-term wear on the belt could be an issue though. Just not sure.
Depends on how well it sits.

Here is what I found out and you might want to try this. Get rid of the Gates belt. Go with the cheaper belt. For some reason the gates belt squeals and whines.
I had a lot of people including me complain about it.
Then one day I was helping someone with this problem and a older man stepped up and said get rid of the gates belt and it will go away.
So after work I changed to the master pro belt and sure enough it stopped.
Over the next month I had people come back in and tell me thank you for fixing the whine.
Just something to try.
