I forgot to mention the expedition has 105,000 miles on it and the camshafts look good based on a cursory inspection of them. I'll have to take them out and clean them up some to be absolutely sure though.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding an affordable but bullet proof brand to go with. I was thinking of going with OEM but a friend said some aftermarket brands are even better but for a lower price. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.
Absolutely NO aftermarket parts are better than Genuine Ford. That's what they will tell you. They want you to buy their product. Ford spends a ton of money R&Ding their products. With tight specs and tolerances. Then the aftermarket world grabs one and figures how they can copy it without going against patent laws. And as CHEAP as possible. Example. Go to that aftermarket parts store and have them show you a power window motor for your truck. It will have a plastic housing. Attached to the door via glorified wood screws. Then go to your local Ford Dealer and have them show you our replacement for the same window motor. It will be a metal housing just like the Factory original. Attached via machine screws going in to metal threads. I know because I have been a Ford Parts Man for 40 years. IS THAT EQUAL TO OR (GASP) BETTER THAN A FORD PRODUCT? And look at the calender and see how long the Ford parts lasted.
Usually the only time a Ford product goes bad (like a recall) is when the outside vendor that was contracted by Ford to make a batch of them at FORD'S specs, made a bad batch.

Make sure you only use a Quality oil and filter. Partial synthetic not petroleum. Sounds like you or the original owner used one of those cheap oil change places. Like J*ffy lube.

JEFFFAFA,

Thanks for advise. I have been sticking with OEM parts through the whole project and have been paying out the nose for them but figured it would be much better in the long run. My intent is to keep the old girl running for another 100,000 miles and have heard some real horror stories about aftermarket timing parts failing after 10,000 miles. I definitely do not want to have to crack into this again for a long time. I must confess Jiffy Lube has serviced it once or twice. Should replacing the lifters and rockers suffice? Any additional suggestions while the cams are off? Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

You're welcome. I am glad you took my info as just that. Not a spanking. That was not my intent. After thinking about what I had posted I was worried you would take it the wrong way. But I have to admit, when I hear about the aftermarket world claiming there stuff is just as good, if not better, I do get riled. That's like comparing a Michelin tire to a no name brand made in China tire.
As far as paying out the nose is concerned, I sent you a visitor message.

No worries

Thanks again. I'm not a seasoned mechanic so any input from those with experience is good input. Sorry about interjecting in the thread. I'm still figuring out the etiquette for these forums.
