Question D2TE-AA Heads

I have a set of Dt2e-aa heads . I am putting them on my 390 in my 4x4. I have a few questions about them.Do I need to have hardened seats put in them or do they already have them. Also should I bother with porting them. I am looking for lots of low end grunt? And about the valves ...should I have the heads machined to accept the larger cj valves? And last of all should I stick with the stock rocker assy or should I do rollers? I have been told that they are not needed due to me only seeing about 3500 rpms to maybe 4000 rpms on occasion. I am trying to get all my parts and mod info together before I build it. I have a good 360 block and I am going to use it and put the 390 crank and rods in it...If $$ gets better I may put a 428 crank or a stroker crank in it.

Your heads have hardened exhaust seats. You should be fine there.

If you just want a 4x4 low end grunt engine, I'd just put a Crane 901 cam, crane lifters, and crane valve springs in it and leave the rest stock. Porting always helps though, but for this particular application I think you'd be best off just leaving well enough alone. Stock valves will work great. Roller rockers aren't necessary for what you're doing. Standard adjustable rocker arms are the way to go though, so you can accurately set the lifter preload. Get the matching pushrods, as the stock ones will not work.

See here for the rocker arms. I would suggest the "FE Adjustable Rocker- used" for $8 apiece. That's what I'm gonna use, anyway.

If you keep the pushrods in order you could probably get away with the stock non-adjustable setup, but I think it will be a lot easier going adjustable.

As I understand it, if you put CJ valves in, you will want to go ahead and put in hardened seats, as the grinding for larger valves removes the "hardened" part.

The hardened material in the valve seats can be removed with just a couple of head rebuilds. The hardened metal in the seats just isn't very thick relatively speaking.
