i have a 67 f-100 2 wheel drive. i have lowered the rear using DJM shackle and their front spring lowering bracket in the lowest hole. i am planning to run Cragar SS wheels 15x8 on the rear how big of a tire can i use.? i like the look of the B.F. Goodrich Silvertown 285/70r15 not the whitewall version. would this be to big.? or should i run spacers to move the wheels out somewhat.? i talked to a guy at a car show yesterday. he said that he paid $ 800.00 just for the two rear tires in that size. i looked at summit racing. they want $225.00 each and its free shipping. he said that he bought them local.thanks for any help with this.

 

Sounds like a good size to me.

275/60R15 is popular, but they're still kinda small imo. So a 285/70R15 should fit well

285/70 would equate to about 31x11.50. I had a pair that size for awhile and they fit fine.

What do you plan on running in the front???

Personally, I like big tires. If it was mine, I'd look at maybe a 255/70 on the front

 

351Cleveland C4 thanks for the info. i am not sure about the size for the front yet. i am going to use Cragar SS 15x7 . i also have DJM Dream Beams for the front. they are supposed to lower the front about 3 inches. we will see. years ago i had a 67 that was not lowered and i ran Cragar SS 15x8 on all four wheels the fronts stuck out kinda far if my memory serves me right. back then in 1978 they did not have Dream Beams.

 

275/60-15s on 15x8s in back and 235/60-15s on 15x7s in front.

 

I run 265 70 15 Nexxen's on 15 x 8 Wheel Vintiques on the rear, and 215 70 15's on the stock 15x5.5's on the front. I like the taller tires in the back to fill up the wheel wells.

 

235/60/15 FRONT AND 275/60/15 REAR here too .
being lowered I think this will be a good size for you

with truck on the ground measure center of wheel to wheel well lip then take that number and multiply by two . this will give you an idea of how much gap you will have with different tires size (diameter )

Go to tire rack and punch in the size tire you want and it will give you the width.diameter ..etc Great tool for getting tire size right for wheel opening .

Lilorbie, another thing to consider, taller tires like the 285 will effectively create a higher gear ratio. If your truck has 3.25 gears like most did, then the 285 would be the better choice for cruising.

 

351Cleveland C4 that,s good to know. to bad my truck has so much patina on it . you can,t even read the number on the rear axle tag. its there but that,s about it. i will have to use the method of counting turns of the diff. verses the wheel . maybe i will get real lucky. my truck is a 240/tott. i am going to change it to a 302/c4.

 

Trucks with 6 cylinder engines had either 3.50 or sometimes even 3.70 gears. In which case, I would DEFINITELY run the tallest tires I could. Or re-gear for short tires.
