I think one of my Coil on Plugs may be bad. I was planning on replacing them and changing the plugs. A couple of questions though..
1) Original plugs at over 100K, should I do myself? Stay Motorcraft?
2) Are the new replacement plugs one piece now?
3) Motorcraft or other COP? Others like Accel are cheaper.. Thoughts?
other than change oil and filter at same time, anything else??
Original plugs, over 100k, chance you might break them off. If you decide to do it yourself, have the Lisle tool ready. There are tons of threads here on tips to help loosen them, but every situation is different. Search them and read them, then you can decide if you want to tackle it yourself, or let a shop handle it.
Stick with Motorcraft plugs, the revisions are improved over the originals. For coils, again, stick with Motorcraft.
Stick with your oil changes at or before 5000 and use 820-S Motorcraft filter.
While you are doing maintenance, when is the last time the trans was serviced?
Tranny was serviced at the interval recommended in maintence book, 90K? Flush/etc. You wouldn't happen to know part numbers for plugs, coils? Also, dielectric grease on coils/boots? No antiseize on plugs, yes? Recommended plug change mileage?
Sp 515's have reports of bad out of the box just for your info
Have 8 of them sitting here not going to use them . I have had good luck with expensive champion 7989's . 3 sets no problem .
Went to them after bad sp507 breakage I fought thru .
Go ahead and read the ford tsb on the orig plug change . Soak the well ahead of time with carb cleaner . Have lisle tool on hand . Plenty of different extensions ,flex head socket wrench .
Pull pcm and bracket to get to 3-4
put cushions on radiator top to lay on .
Use new boots and springs
clean wells out with air before you start .
clean cop contacts --corrosion is the main problem
Put dielectric grease on each end of boot not on electrical connections, it is an insulator .
Keep hands, boots, plugs clean . '
Use rubber spark socket ,start plugs by fingers
Torque plugs 25-28 foot pounds ,wrench not by feel
I use very very little nickle anti seize on plugs threads
Cop bolts use a little antiseize on them , they have been shearing off .
I had SP515s installed when I had mine replaced. I also swapped out all 8 of the COPs with MSD Blaster units. Paid $235 for a set of 8 and they have performed perfectly. My oil change interval is 6000 miles and I use Mobile 1 5W20 High Mileage. During hotter months I change the oil every 4000 miles since I use it to pull a fiberglass bass boat with a V6 outboard. I use either the Motorcraft or WIX oil filter. Tranny fluid is still pink...
