hi gang, fabs here, this is my first post on this forum
We've had our 2001 e150 (camper) for a few years now, with little milage (we dont use it much). It now has around 109 000miles (160k km) on the clock and from what i've heard, it still hasn't broken in yet.
it has the 4.6L engine. I was curious to know..is it the exact same engine as the ones found in the GRand marquis/town cars? I wanted to know if it suffers from the same dreaded manifold leak?
It also has a small tube tv in it. I can't seem to catch any channels as i guess due to the new HD conversion. I have a small converter ( to catch hd channels and any OTA channels). How can i connect it to the back of the TV? any ideas?
thanks

4.6 in the cars is called intech, trucks (with special intake) is called Triton. I think the intake is the real difference. I've had my 98 E150 since new, original manifolds, no problems.
As for the TV, I didn't want to deal with mine anymore so I just took it out of the van.
98ECO. thanks for the reply. Yes i believer you are right, the cars have the intech and our van has triton badge on it. if i'm not mistaken, wasn't there a 5.4L engine choice as well? any difference between them? i find the 4.6 to be an adequate engine for this van. We don't really load heavy stuff with it, nor tow. I have to say, i find it a little overwhelming the tight quarts of the engine bay. I've had v8's before (my beloved '96 caprice police pack) and love them! it was a great car to work on, lots of room, the van seems a bit tougher.
Question: to change the headlight bulb, do you just pull up on the flat metal tabs on the corner of the light and the whole assembly pops out?
thanks
Yes there was a 5.4 V8. Size is the obvious difference. Mine has coil packs, yours I believe has COPs. EGR, vacuum harness and a few other things are different. I like the 4.6, it is good to work on for most things. It's not the most powerful, but it does its job.
Yes. Pull the tabs to change headlamp bulbs, that is the aerodynamic front end (high series). The low series uses sealed beams and a trim ring. Either way, be careful with the tabs, the plastic gets very brittle and will break.
I have used silicone paste to grease the locking tabs near the holes cut out in them, this makes them easier to remove and reduces the chance they will get stuck next time.
cool, thanks for the info. i think on the 4.6, didn't it have regual spark plugs? hopefully not the crazy 3-piece once (that have the long silver piece in the middle) i hear they are hard to install.
Thanks for the headlight info, from your small profile pic, my van has the same front-end as yours (same type of lights).
thanks

It does use regular spark plugs. MotorCraft SP493. 4.6 2V is known for spitting spark plugs. I've never had this issue. It is recommended to go over the specs. Do four from the front and four from the rear. I like to remove the fuel rails to get to the spark plugs, but that's just me.
Cool, thanks for the video, doesn't seem too bad to change the plugs, especially that you can get to the back ones from inside the truck.
so what do you mean by "spitting plugs"? is there something i should be looking out for?
thanks

forgot to ask..where abouts are you in the US? do you get/drive in snow? how do you find your van handles?
where we are in canada (quebec) we get quite a bit of it. My brother is a nuts about nokian tires, so he put some studded hakka's on it. Personally, i don't like these tires on the van. I really like blizzaks, i guess adding some weight on the back wouldn't hurt?

You will be much better off scrapping the old TV and upgrading to a newer one with a coax cable input and HDMI to adapt directly to your OTA antenna. An old tube type TV will not properly display the resolution of the digital antenna output. Also, you can more easily plug in a game console or movie machine/DVD/BluRay/Roku/etc.
You may be surprised to know how cheap a small HDTV costs these days.
On a 2001 V8 E van I change all the spark plugs from inside the van without removing anything but the coils. Of course the doghouse will come off, but the seats stay, the fuel rails stay.
Most people agree that the original spec of ~14 ft lbs of torque is too loose which is why the spark plugs eject. I tighten them to 30 ish and they will stay in.

certain years have issues with the threads pulling out.
there was a gut here who ran a fleet of vans and said they were good for over 300k miles
and when he did change them , drivability and gas milage were unaffected
he ran the vans up to close to a million miles and knew them inside and out
I don't remember what years had the issues though

I'm near Chicago. My van is decent. I learned to drive in cars that are considered "primative" so I am not worried about TCS, ESC, RSC or any nannies. I just drive slower and more considerately than in the other three seasons. I load the back with sand to help traction a bit. I haven't had but a couple times where I've spun out and it was my own fault. I use Michelin Defender LTXs for spring to fall and Michelin Latitude X Ice Xi-2s for winter.
Update...
so I decided to change the headlight bulbs, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The metal tabs to pull up to remove housing was a little rusted into place. With some silicone spray and pliers they came out ok. Put on some sylvania ultra bulbs. Will see how it goes tonight. The headlight assembly has faded with time.
98econo. Glad to hear on the tires. I think we'll have to load the back with some sand next winter. I'm not a fan of studs but will try them again.
our van is a "legacy" edition and has the lowered skirting all around, looks great gut in winter gets caught in the snow.

I am a big fan of Michelin tires, they ride nice, and are excellent performing. The Defender LTX is very good. I talked my girl friend into a set for her Edge.
Those side skirts are nothing but trouble for the body. My van is suffering the ravages of road salt. I will be taking it to the body shop to get all the rust fixed and to freshen up the paint.
