One of those, I should have gotten the 6.5' bed moments. A weekend of gear fits, but just barely.
The hassle of not having almost enough room for gear more than offsets the hassle of parking the longer F150 or not being able to park in your garage if it`s long enough for the 5.5 bed.
I like the 6.5' bed. I only got mine for tax reasons (IRS section 179), but have come to prefer the more balanced proportions and ability to carry more stuff without rolling up my bed cover.
I'm lucky, it fits in my garage at home and at work.
The only pain I feel is when we stop at a restaurant. The parking tends to be tighter and sometimes I forgo closer parking spots in favor of ones that are easier to slip into and out of...
I was worried about these moments when ordering my 2017. My '07 was a Scab 6.5' bed and my dog rode in the back (under a cap, with a bed that protected him from cargo). We do a lot of traveling within 3 hours hauling a lot of stuff often. But luckily, the dog fits on the floor of the crew cab, so it freed up 30" of bed space, actually giving me more cargo room than I had before.
Your kid looks happy, and that is what really matters!
I too question the decision of not getting a longer bed each time we load up for a race weekend. I'm learning to load more in the trailer, which is probably a good thing since I've been close to the GCWR. And since we only go thru this one weekend a month, the real need for a longer bed is minimal.
I've had two 5.5 beds, one 6.5 and one 8' in my last four trucks. I can say for sure that going straight down the road and for carrying gear, the 8' was amazing. Just couldn't live with the length. The 6.5 has really impressed me, I don't know if it's how I pack, but I find it MUCH more spacious. Maybe because I'm still thinking of a the 5.5 bed? Or I'm getting smarter, although my wife doesn't think so.
If I was buying new, I still haven't figured out which one I would buy. I live close to the city centre here, so parking is an issue.
With the SCrew 6.5 bed, you're in Super Duty territory. And they're a pain in the neck to park in most parking lots. It's like all the parking spots are made for rice-burners and roller skates.
The 5.5 is a compromise but you park a lot more often than you haul as a rule. Then there's the War Department....... er, er, The Dear Wife.

I agree...My SD was a CC with the 8' box and it was a boat. I've said this before, but when I test drove the F-150 with the 6'5 bed I still was hitting curbs. The 5.5' bed is just the right length for 99 out of 100 days.
Still, I think the truck proportions look best with the 6.5' bed
