Hi All - Have a 96 B3000 V6 2wd with speedo that operates briefly when cold, but quits after a mile or two. In hot weather it may not run at all. SOME times the zenith method banging on the dash will make it run for a few moments.
I've tested the speed sensor in the tranny and it appears fine. I read somewhere about cleaning contacts and clips that hold the device in the cluster so I've done that. Don't really see anything obvious but I know how that goes. Before I put it back in I'd like to know if I can test the speedo unit itself? I see 4 pins, one each for signal, power, ground and one I haven't figured out.
Anyone know how to guide a moderately capable tech thru such a thing?
https://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/Wd,,,, this is what i found when i goggled search wiring diagram,,,,no idea why my link is not working,,,but goggle and go and save,,,,great site
Well I'm no further along and looking to replace this speedo.
There are tons of Ranger/Explorer units available cheap. Does anyone know if auto vs manual are in any way different? Photos appear identical. everyone on Ebay lists them as fitting 2.3's and 4.0's but this cannot be right, right?
Sure could use any knowledgeable peeps to pipe up - thanks!
I have been reading up on the speedo change,,,getting confusing info,,,,some say explorer will work,,,,most say 96 to 2001 are the same,,,,some say tach wire is there if you have one now or not,,,,some say to try and keep number of cylinders the same and some say it does not matter how many cylinders,,,,,now I am really confused LOL
Indeed it is very confusing. A bit of searching on Ebay and the results are ridiculous. I ended up going to car-part dot com and ordering a used unit from an identical truck because it's too confusing. Ford database states same part # for 95-97 Ranger regardless of sub model, auto or manual. Shows slightly different part numbers for Explorer, Mountaineer.
