Hello everyone, has anybody here done a successful conversion of their A/C system. I am curious if you had any luck trying R12 compatible refill kits. If one goes the 134a route, do I need to upgrade the compressor also?Any help and/or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks`yall
It is recommended to replace most everything. Lines, conpressor, condensor, orfice tube, evap. Best way, find a 95 (for example) with factory ac and swap those parts in it. Should be the same for gas and diesel. You can also order all.new by year off of rockauto. Just use 94 and later.
I used r12a I found on Amazon to charge the AC in my 86 f250. It was $60 and worked well. I imagine it might leak out again in a year or two but by that time I would be willing to disassemble the system, replace the hoses and drier and recharge it.
Truthfully, I'm convinced that r12a and r152 make r134a conversions obsolete. Unless you are considering putting a full Vintage Air unit or stock unit like Adam mentioned on your truck just use an r12 substitute. True, it's against the law... but that's another topic of conversation.
FWIW, I retrofitted a 1990 Buick Estate wagon to r134a years ago when I took an AC class. I did everything correctly (i.e. replaced the lines, drier and orifice tube). Unfortunately, it never cooled quite well.
