I have heard a rattle during acceleration and on grade. Its kinda like putting a screwdriver inside a pipe and tapping it quickly back n' forth. Been told that its pre-ignition and need to use higher octane. Tried this, does limit how often, n' how loud, the rattle is. I've also told it may be a timing problem. Took to shop, tech told me "everything's fine" and charged me for hooking it up to computer.
I have a rattle that took me some time to find it. I sounded like a loose heat shield and like it was up front. i
It is inside the muffler. It makes the noise under acceletration.

Did this tech try to duplicate the conditions or did he just "read your codes" and waste everyones time? This is something that normally won't set a code.
I have heard the noise that JJz is talking about. It is a sharper sound than "pinging" but they are similar.
If you know anyone that knows what a ping sounds like, take them for a drive and make sure this is what you hear.Usually with the exhaust rattle, I have been able to duplicate it by putting a vehicle in gear (drive) holding the brake and putting a load on it (pushing the gas pedal)
You motor should not ping with reg unleaded so I don't think it is that. The heat shield should be checked. Also if the engin predetonates and the timing has to be retarded enough times it should set a code.
Part of the challenge is that it doesn't always make the noise.....Thanks for the advice re: the heat shield, Ill check it out. I'll also take it to an independant mechanic for another view. And no, the tech did not try to duplicate the conditions, although they swore they did....but I have a hard time believing them since there wasn't any additional miles on the odometer.

Suggestions very welcome.
I went through this 4 different times with my 3.0 V6 Ranger and our local Ford dealer. We traded the truck for a Contour. But it was always my belief that the dealer could have either found out what was wrong and why or even spent some time trying to talk to someone, but it's the old majority rule. One person with one problem just isn't important enough to a big, high volume dealer to spend the time with. It is a horrible way to do business, but that's how most american businesses are these days. I even called the Ford hotline, or tech line or whatever the heck it was an was told by a very, very unpleasant woman that there was nothing that could be done and no, I could NOT talk to a Ford technician there. But, there is someone somewhere who can and will take the time to diagnos your problem. It's up to you to hunt that person down. I just went through 3 months of trying to find out why my Contour kept blowing the insulators out of the plugs. But I finally did, and it was by being the squeaky wheel.
Ford! Spark plug blowing out " never heard of it"
Trans shield "never heard of that problem"
Paper thin brakes on the Thunderbirds of old "never had a problem"
Ford will neve admit to anything! OK not only Ford. A company I worked for burnt 6 chevy trucks to the ground because the trans dip stick would blow out. I got one in the mail for my truck (like 1990) with a letter to use this dip stick. Even though a case of fire had never been reported the possibility of fire was there" LOL yes we reported them as did many others I am sure.
Yes...my wife has reminded me of a previous experience with a rattle from the engine. We bought a '95 Mustang that every so often would emit the same rattle I'm hearing from the truck. Back then the service manager told us it was a relay switch...riiiiight, a relay switch. At least he helped us to decide where we would NOT buy our next vehicle. I lived in a small town just north of KC, MO for about a year, the dealer there, Dave Littleton Ford, was great. Never any excuses, they just fixed it. My wife and I joke that when we buy our next vehicle, we'll fly out there to get it from them, drive it back to Vegas.
Check the flex plate between the engine and transmission. Its located just above the Inspection cover for the tor. Convertor at the front of the trans. I had to pry it out about a 1/8 of an inch to stop my rattle. My rattle sounded like I had BB's in the exhaust system. The noise was most noticable when it shifted. and under heavy load
On my 01 van last year my V10 was pinging under load AC on going up a hill, towing our travel trailer under acceraltion.Brought it to first dealer was told they could'nt get it to do it and did'nt show any code. One idiot said a little pinging is normal!!!! Took it to another dealer and the tech told my wife he had to order someting in to change the parametor. I assumed it had to do with the timing. It worked no pinging since. Even pulling our new 32ft trailer.
My 2000 excursion v10 has 2 vibes. I fixed one. Kinda. On the y pipe there is a heat shield that the welds had loosened up on so it vibrated when accellerating. I simply pryed it down with a screwdriver to that it is about 1/2" away from pipe where weld is broke. If I had a welder, I probably would have just rewelded it. I put on a Gibson cat back and it really is a nice system with good power gains but it made the vibration louder. Now it's gone though. The second one I get is when it shifts into overdrive, and the converter locks up, I goes "IIRRTT" for a second or two seconds if I'm towing. I hate it! But reading the above post, it sounds like it may be the shield between the tranny and the engine by the inspection hole. I talk a look today. By the way the Gibson isn't loud, it has a nice little rumble, but not loud. I also have MAC high flow intake, the combo made a very noticable difference in accelleration. I'm going to add a bigger throttle body from BBK and a Banks transmission controller next. I'll keep the sight updated after I do that. Probably in a month for the next mods.
