This has been going on for a while and I had given up all hope for fixing it, but now I am going to give it one last try.
I have a 1979 F100 with obviously a 302 2bbl carb. Starts up quick and fine with no trouble, but as soon as I shift out of park into any gear (other than neutral) it stumbles down. As soon as I give it gas it dies.
It ran fine before I changed the transmission. It is a C4. I got it out of a 75 LTD. I can't imagine I screwed anything up but anything is possible. I drove it for a week or two before and it slowly got worse and worse about stalling in gear until it finally got to the point it is in now.
question: what motor was in the LTD? sometimes if you use a converter from a motor that produces more off idle torque (say 351w) and using it on a smaller motor will cause that.. (it converter has a lower stall speed with less torque).
but a couple of other things: did you go from a stick to an auto, and have you checked your idle and timing?
Thanks for the responses. I had a C4 before and I swapped in another C4. The LTD did have a 351, I never thought about the torque converter causing a problem like that. I still have my old one so I will check it out. I don't know where the vaccum modulator vaccum lines go to. they just sit there on the passanger side of the engine. They have hard lines attached to them and I don't see anywhere for them to go. Plus I checked a couple of trucks in the junkyard and they were the same way as mine.
