have a set of 3.54/3.55 in my 86 1 ton t-19. Originally had 235 85 16's, now running a 35 bfg AT. I swapped the d50 for a Dana 60 and just to match, I put in the 3.54. I now believe I should be regretting that decision because of such a low gear ratio. Reason I bring up the axle swap was because of the carrier break, will a 3.73 or 4.10 be sufficient to overcome the taller tire and make me "feel" like it's got more power? Or will I need to go with the 4.56 or taller gear break? It's a complete dog even for a hopped up 460 with the highway gears, not even sure if it'll do a proper burnout. I wanted to get things in order before I tear out the open diff and swap for something that should spin more than one wheel....Thanks all!
3.54s are not enough for 35" tires. They are just barely adequate for 33s.
For 35s, the 3.73 or 4.10 is a good choice. if you drive highways speeds (over 5omph) more than 60% of the time I would do the 3.73 gears. If you are low speed, towing, or off-roading then the 4.10s would be the better choice. IMO.
In gearing terms, 4.10's & 35" tires would put you back where the truck originally was, with 3.54's & 235/85-16 tires.
... but if you're concerned about doing "a proper burnout", then you don't want stock, and since you don't care abut your tires you probably don't care about gas mileage either. You would probably be better suited with at least 4.56 gears, and maybe even lower.
Thanks guys, I believe 4.10's to be the answer, without shelling out for new front carrier. I'm not looking for a burnout monster, just elaborating the fact that it takes incrementally more torque to spin a larger tire with a shorter gear ratio. It is mainly my tow rig, 75mph max speeds. Anyone looking to trade 4.10's for 3.55's?
You would need a new carrier for the front, as the break is for above 3.73s. However, the 4.10s would be well worth the carrier purchase, and would be a good time to put in a selectable locker
SELF EDIT: The D50 had no carrier breaks, so you can throw in any size gears without changing carriers. If you wish to go deeper, I'm not sure if the D50/Sterling had a 4.30 gearset, but that may be a compromise if you want a bit deeper gear than the 4.10s. Personally, I think you'll be happy with the 4.10s and granny gear
It's a Dana 60 front, pretty sure it's a 4.10 break, I could be wrong though. Only selectable I saw is the arb. It would be nice if someone had the same setup and wanted highway gears and we swap them.
