So I saw this in the 6.7 section just now. I wish I had seen it before last weekend. I just put 15 quarts of the Chevron Delo CK-4 in along with a bottle of Archoil friction modifier. Similarly to diesel engine coolants...I figured if Caterpillar approves...why the hell wouldn't Ford(Navistar/International in our case)? Do I need to change the f&46ing oil again? I would assume to do the filter as well. Roughly $80 if I don't spring for more Archoil which I feel the need to. Damn. Thoughts?
I had seen this also. I thought I remember reading Ford was recommending a different type of oil then the type you have pictured. Let me see if I can dig it up.

Yeah...It's the in-house Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 spec. Either that or the old CJ-4. I mean...5k miles couldn't hurt the thing. Right?
I wouldn't think so if it's a one time thing. Either that or just go 3,000 on this change and get I think out of there.
Yeah...I think you may be right. It is strange though because technically this new spec outperforms the others all around. Ford ended up having some "abrasive wear" concerns after in-house testing and decided not to recommend it for any of their PSD engines.
So I've thought more about this. I just went back in with the same Delo 400 CK-4. I don't buy that when nearly every other diesel mfg is okay with the CK-4...only Ford isn't. You can't find CJ-4 anymore in the store.
Ford is just ensuring they can deny a warranty claim unless you use their in-house spec.
I'll be using a good brand name CK-4 (same as oil pictured above) and changing every 5k as usual.
the report I saw refered to pre-mature wear....so that tells me not enough zinc and phosperous....so if you add archoil...that would be enough for me not to worry about it. prestone makes a zinc / phosperous additive that comes in a small yellow bottle that costs about 10 bucks.

I will have to check out the Prestone stuff. The older oil is getting harder and harder to find.
I was wondering about this just last week when buying oil.
Went with Rotella T4, which clearly shows it meets CJ-4 on the back of the bottle.
It does smell rather bad compared to the Valvoline High Mileage diesel oil I ran on the previous change. Threw in 16 ounces of Archoil last night as well.
One other thing I've noticed about the Rotella is that it seems to run a couple degrees hotter than the Valvoline as well.
I also run the Archoil friction modifier at every oil change(5k). All the name brand CK-4 oils (for me Chevron DELO 15W-40) note that they meet or exceed the CJ-4 and all previous specs of engine oil(ASME). It just seems odd that only Ford would have an issue and those like CAT, Mack, and Cummins (among others) approve of CK-4 performance.
