Odd overheating issue

Truck is a 93 F150 5.0 5spd. Recently got it all running correctly so decided to go camping this weekend..the road up to my favorite high mountain lake is about 20-40% grade for 25 miles...after 30 miles of flatlands (minor hills) tempurature was normal and about 18 miles into the high grade roads in second gear running 15-20mph the temp gauge was almost max and coolant was boiling in the resevoir tank and upper hose, I thought i blew a head gasket but all is well there, So after cooling down for 30 mins i turned around and headed down hill and noticed the temp was normal so out of curiosity i took another logging road that is minor hills and flatish for 20 miles and the truck never got hot again..So what gives? Clearly the Water pump, fan, and thermostat is working properly, only thing i can think of is would a lack of a fan shroud make that much differance? or maybe air got trapped and caused pressure when at such a steep angle? Ive driven this truck up that hill at least 70 times in the last 3 years so its a first time issue.

Was that the first trip up without the fan shroud? In my opinion it is very important when the fan is engaged. It directs the air to be pulled through the radiator instead of a lot of air being pulled from the engine side of the radiator not passing through to cool.

Fan shroud is a must have. If the truck doesn't have one the fan needs to be about a half inch away from the radiator. A working fan clutch helps too. I was driving through Idaho on Friday, and the temp gauge would climb to the A in NORMAL. I'd hear the roar of the fan then the temp would drop down to the R. It did this several times before I got to my destination.

Replace the fan shroud before going any further. Otherwise you are throwing good money for no reason. It has been awhile but I ordered a replacement from an online retailer for less than $30.
