It's more likely that you have wiring problems (bad ground?) or your system voltage is low. Other than at idle, they should be as bright as 12v tungsten headlights.

I wonder if you have 12 volt bulbs in a 6 volt system?

All the above are good points. They also make 6 volt halogen bulbs. I bought mine at NAPA for about.... I think.... about 16 bucks each.

i agree with Ross... check the wiring, especially the grounds... lots of rust = voltage drops

A six volt headlight should be as bright as a twelve volt one. Check voltage at the headlights with the lights on to make sure you're getting a full six volts there. Besides bad feed and ground connections a crusty dimmer or light switch can be a cause for low voltage also.

I would start at the dimmer switch. Usually the middle terminal come from the head lite
switch which should have good vts check the other two thats high and low beam should
be good volts if not dimmer is bad, if good next remove seal beam check each side of
the plug thats high & low volts should be as good as the dimmer test if not something
wrong with wires from that plug to the dimmer (most likely bullit connectors all green
corrosion) Then on the bulb plug, test the ground terminal that usually is the wire screwed to the bucket to fender, should be good if week then test the fender for ground. Or get a jumper & jump that grd. wire to batt. ground put bulb back in is it now bright? If you notice all newer
vehicles the radiator support has a ground wire.

I have had 6volt halogens in my 55 Fairlane for years. They are much brighter, but they draw the battery down at idle.☹️ Jag

I heard they use less power than regular headlights.

I would lean towards more current because the voltage is half, and if they are as bright presumably the power output is the same (based on comments above) which would require double the current (E x I =P)

Halogens are very bright, but power hogs. If you want to lessen the power demands, you'll need to go LED. Jag
