Okay just picked up a 85 FI 302 with dual tanks guy said that the rear tank isn't "hooked up" and that the fuel gauge doesn't work. I don't actually care about having both tanks more or less just the gauge. Read tons of post on here about the gauge not working. And the problem being one of three: gauge, selector switch or sender. Just one thing I'm confused about is if it reads both tanks at once to determine fuel level or if its per what tank is selected. Believe I understand how to test the gauge and will do so later tonight. Hope that all makes sense. And thanks in advance!

okay just a update didn't want to make a new thread. I have replaced the sender unit in the front tank and have also found out that its the only one hooked up. Fuel selector valve (I believe has been removed). No fuel lines from the rear tank are hooked to anything. I can peg the needle on the fuel gauge by grounding it. there was a break in the dark blue/yellow somewhere between the gauge its self and the tank so i ran a new wire from the tank to the yellow/white wire behind the cluster and still no activity from the gauge. also have a autometer fuel gauge for 10-73ohms that i have tried hooking up as well. And am just stumped
You can make the fuel gauge needle swing back and forth by grounding the wire that goes to the sending unit? If so, the wire and the gauge are working. If it's not too much trouble, I would pull the front sending unit out again(I believe you can sneak it out the top without pulling the tank) and then hook the guage wire up to the sending unit, and run a ground wire from the sending unit frame to a good ground on the truck. You should be able to move the float up and down and watch the guage move up and down. Maybe you have a grounding problem to the sending unit.

Well I actually ended up dropping the rear tank and taking the unit out of the rear and hooking it up to the front tank wiring harness and moved the float to the top, and the fuel gauge went to full and then to the bottom and back to empty. So either the new unit is bad? Or maybe the float is caught.
