I read the IIHS report on headlights at the end of last year. Their results mirror CR's results. Some vehicles with dazzling lights are given poor ratings while other vehicles with average lights are given higher ratings.
If they were reviewing the halogens, I'm not surprised about the poor rating. My '05 F-150 had way better headlights than the new SD, especially the high beams. I mean these lights work - I can see the road, but to me its one of the few things on this truck I'm not impressed with.
A couple years ago Acura had the best headlights CR ever tested with their new LEDs. I compared the LEDs with the previous years xenon and noted some dim spots in my field of vision that weren't there with the xenons.
It's really hard to photo headlight beam pattern. I tried to but couldn't replicate it for comparison. I test drove the F250 LEDs and they were every bit as bright if not more than the Acura.
