97+ topper on a '92 F150?

I found a guy selling a really nice Leer topper from an 07' and it's listed as being compatible with 92-96 F150s. I checked Leer's website and it confirms it. But I would have sworn that newer trucks had a something different going on with the tailgate's shape or dimensions.

Has anyone fit a newer topper on their OBS truck? I am wondering if I'm going to be pulling off my old topper just to find the newer one leaves a big gap or something above the tailgate.

Here is a photo of mine: I am looking at this different topper so I'll be able to work on the truck inside my garage. Too many days working outdoors!

The guy may have had that cap on an 07 but it wasn't made for that truck and probably didn't fit so well, it's got styling that clearly says '90's to me hence why it appears to be a perfect fit on your truck.

In '97 ford changed the shape of the rear cab so that the window overhung the bed slightly(see pic below), so toppers had to change as well. Somewhere in the 2k's they dropped that idea again but the length and shape of the beds.. wider at the front narrower at the rear, the height of the bed sides and the shape of the tailgate changed with every generation so now those '90s caps pretty much won't properly fit anything but a '90s truck. I also have a nice Leer cap off my old truck I can't seem to get rid of.. but that's not for lack of trying. I have had lots of potential buyers over with newer trucks but this thing doesn't really fit any of them. This pic below is a '97 I believe.. it's just something I found on the web.

Thanks! And sorry for the confusion - that photo I posted is my current topper (came with the truck). This is the model which was on the '07 I'm looking at upgrading to:

Unfortunately he didn't have a photo with a view of the vehicle. It sounds like there's a chance it may fit my truck, but to what degree... I'll give it the college try and report back;

No. any cap from a 98+ truck does NOT fit the 80-97.
The simplest way to tell if it will fit.... does the truck have wing windows? yes, then the cap will fit. No, then it will NOT fit

'97 does get confusing because F-150/F-250 guys think that was the first year of the new body style and F-250HD/F-350 guys think it's the last year of the old. But if it's the topper is off a new body style truck (without wing windows, as Brad said), it probably won't fit an old body style truck. (I know from personal experience that an '02 SuperDuty topper won't fit an old body style. I don't have any experience with the new body style F-150.)

Thanks everyone! That mention of firsthand experience is especially good to hear. The seller's former vehicle (that the cap is from) was definitely a super duty. I won't bother going through the song and dance of driving the truck in to work to fool around with this other cap, then. I may end up biting the bullet and visiting some retailers.

The last guy I had over to test my cap had a superduty. The cap itself fit passably well.. length was good and it fit well enough at the cab and was maybe a little too wide at the rear but that was something one could live with for the price, the deal breaker though was the rear window/door which would not completely close, the plastic arched lip on the SD tailgate was completely in the way leaving a good 3" gap at the bottom.

I had a hard time finding a new tonneau cover or shell to fit my 95 short bed. I think part of it was the retail shops not believing you could get a new one for an old truck. Ended up finding a place that knew what they were doing and they ordered a new ARE tonneau cover for me. I really like it.

Funny, when i tried to put the topper from my '02 SuperDuty on my '97 (both short boxes), the SuperDuty toper was significantly too wide in front and too narrow in the rear. Definitely enough miss to be a deal breaker, with gaps that weren't covered at both ends.
