I'm looking around for a cap (topper) for my truck. I have an 8' bed. I saw an ad for one that says it will fit an 88-96 Ford. Wouldn't that still fit our trucks too? Did the bed demensions change?
I saw another one of an '89 Chebby. Would that fit? I thought a lot of caps for the older trucks were kind of universal. Whatcha think?
I'm not looking for anything fancy, as I won't use it a lot. Trying to get out cheap!
I'm not sure about the chevy one jolly green but a buddy of mine borrowed the factory cap from my 78 and it fit his 93 perfect.now all I have to do is get it back.
I figured Ford would fit Ford, but Chevy probably not. I do know that the back glass of a 80-96 will fit a 73-79, of course that just says about the cab.
friend of mine is a body man by trade,he is doing a dentside,we went and got a box of an early 90's and bought 2 new full box skins from the local parts store, now after alot of picking and filling to make the new sides presentable we drilled out all the factory spot welds holding on the 90's sides, cleaned it all up and plug welded the new side onto the 90's box and fitted it to his truck and just as we were told it was a perfect fit.it was alot of work and this guys picky,he has more time and money into the paint on the frame and underside of his truck then I do in my whole truck and he is pleased with how it looks.sorry for the long windedness but thats how I knew the cap would fit when I was asked if it could be borrowed.
Well, I guess what might be a perfect fit to some isn't to others. A couple years ago I was given a longbed topper (factory, or whatever you want to call it) off of a '74 F250 and we set it on a '96 F350 that I had at the time. It fit OK, perfect for length, of course, and the front width was nearly perfect, but the rear width was not perfect. The topper overhung the body sides pretty noticeably. So we measured the widths of the trucks, and the '96 had a slight inward taper as you moved to the rear and his '74 maintained its width front to back. This was only on the exterior sheetmetal - not the inside opening or interior of the box. The heights were slightly off too. But it was free, so I used it for awhile before giving it away to somebody else and selling the truck. So to answer the question, yes, it will work just fine, but perfect fit, I didn't think so at least. The '88-newer GM's demonstrate this same taper as well, but '87-older do not. The older ('93-down) Dodges were pretty rectangular too. Just try to take a lot of measurements, if at all possible.
Thanks for all the good information, guys! I mostly want to use it for the occasional camping trip and set up a sleeper in the bed. We talked about this in a thread a while back. Beside that, I won't run with it on much.
Maybe I'll hold out for one that will fit better. I actually like the looks of the old style aluminum caps on our trucks. They just seem to match right.
