Power Steering Leak

'03 Ex. 6.0 Diesel 160k miles.

I have a power steering box leak that came on suddenly.

The leak is coming from around the pittman arm shaft... and it is pouring out. It's not under pressure, it's just running out and running down the pittman arm.

I've never seen a steering box leak as bad as this is. I've checked the hoses and they all appear dry.

Is this common? Can the seal be changed in the truck or should I be looking at changing the steering box?

Thanks in advance for all advice.

Yes you can replace the seal, might not fix the leak if the bushings are worn though.

Priced a reman box at my favorite NAPA and it's under $140 (with a $200 core!)

It looks like it's a no brainer... I haven't decided if I'm up for doing the change myself... I might farm it out.

We have a step by step 'how to' if you decide to R&R yourself.

Yes! I found that in my searches here.

It looks pretty straightforward and normally I would have just done it myself. I've been having some issues with my neck.. (just had another RF nerve burn yesterday) and I don't know if I can physically lower/lift the box right now.

This getting old stuff is not for wimps!

To follow up on this..... I had a local shop swap the box for me. He said he had a hard time getting the arm of, but it's done and all is good.. $150 for labor well spent.

Agree on the arm; I took mine to NAPA and they removed it for free. Glad you're back on the road!
