2004 Ford 6.0 Excursion TFT

I recently went on a roadtrip from Texas to Arizona, In Arizona my transmission gauge went crazy. I did some research and found it was probably the TFT. Went to the dealer and bought the sensor, transmission fluid, and filter. Since I was not at home I went to a shop that was recommended to me and had them change the TFT out with the new one. Problem did not go away. The mechanic said it is probably the wiring but that it would take some time and that he would have to replace the parts. He did tell me that I would be OK to drive it home, 1300 miles. I had some issues getting into 5th gear but once there it drove normally all the way home. Can somebody guide me on what to check next? I don't want to drop a ton of money and is changing the wiring a big job?
First post long time reader. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Do you use an aftermarket scanner (SG2, SCT X4, Edge, etc) to monitor temps or are you looking at the dash gauge?

I would buy an SG2 and see if consistent?
