NP245 Question

Hello Everyone,

I was perusing a used CL ad and the gentleman has what he is calling a "Hiboy" (1970s ford 4x4) NP245 and a 2 wheel drive version of the NP245. I'm looking to get an NP245 as a backup (to freshen and eventually replace the T19 in my 84 F150 4x4 ) unit...the seller advised that I'd want to go with the 2 wheel drive unit as it is best suited to my trucks original style T-case?

Can anyone give me a quick tutorial on this potential interchange, and would I in fact need the 2 wheel drive version ?

Thanks for your consideration!

Shawn

If he's talking about the NP435 4 speed with the 2wd styled output shaft, then it's a true 'Highboy' with divorced transfer case. However, he's wrong in saying that it's transmission will fit in your '84 4x4. After the Highboys, all ford's used married transfer cases, meaning you need a transmission that came off of a 4x4 truck that attaches directly to the T-case.

Also, your 84 would have come with a T18 or NP435 stock, not a T19

DeereFord,

Yes, it's a T18 (my finger was off) ! His exact quotes after I asked him about my compatability: "You'd want the 2 wheel drive unit then, I believe. The bellhousing is the only real difference. The Hiboy had a long output shaft for the divorced transfer case." I need to do some more reading on these, but are you saying I need the 4x4 NP245, but may need to change out for an output shaft of proper length to my 84 ?

I sure appreciate your time!

Shawn

I'm most certain that these NP245 units are from 1976 to 1979 ford 1/2 ton 4x4s.

Where are you getting this NP245? All I can find is it was a transfer case for a Jeep.

Franklin,

I don't understand your post with respect to a jeep. I'm simply trying to buy a used NP245 from a.guy selling a.couple from his leftover pile from some mid 70s ford 4x4 builds. I need to figure out if I can bolt one into my 84 F150 4x4.

I did a google search for a NP245. It's a Jeep transfer case as far as I can tell. Are you going to try and put a Jeep transfer case in your truck?

Franklin,

My apologies as I'm abit dyslexic today. Its an NP435 transmission I'm looking to fit, not the Jeep NP245 transfer case !

I thank you for your trying to help me !

Warm Regards,

Shawn

If it's the 2wd style out of a 70's highboy 4x4, it will not fit. You need a 4x4 transmission.

If you want to learn about it, do a google search for "married" versus "divorced" transfer case setups. You need a "married" setup for your truck.

High Boys: 1967/76 F250 4WD; 1977 F250 4WD before serial number Y20,001.

High Boys have a divorced transfer case and an in-cab fuel tank.

1967: 240/300/352 / 1968/74: 240/300/360 / 1975/76: 300/360 / 1977: 300/351M/400.

NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to the shift tower with two pins.

To remove this spring loaded cap, trans has to be in neutral. The cap must be pressed down by hand and held down while turning it counter clockwise to remove it.

Some people are unaware, use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out one or both of the notches. Not pleasant! Now they're stuck and aren't going anywhere until they replace the cap.

Thanks ND. If I have him send the 4x4 tag/ID number, can I somehow determine if it will swap into my 84 ?

What trans does your '84 F150 4WD have?

RTS TS-OD Top Shift 4 speed overdrive or Warner T-18 or New Process 435?

Well I have found an NP435 transmission. ......it's IN MY TRUCK !!!! When I crawled it last week it was cold and dark out, so I did a cursory search for the I'd tag and didn't find it. I photographed the right side of the case which has the PTO cover. After my very last post I did some quick research on the T18/19 vs NP435 and noted the case shapes. The square shape hit me (no tapered T18 rear housing) and this is absolutely the original NP435. It's dated 8-10-1983, a few months before the truck build date. The NP435 tag is on the tranny, clear as day (after a wire brushing) and the door data sticker has tranny code "A", and my rear axel code is 19 for 3.55. This explains why the truck has always gotten 20 plus mpg on the open road. I thank you all for your input and help....now I just need to buy a.rebuild kit to freshen her up !

Thanks again,

Shawn

Number dummy, I really appreciate you typing out the info on the shifter tower pins. I had actually saved your response to someone from an older discussion on this very matter, so I will get new pins before I tear it apart. Thanks again Sir !
