2003 with 5.4 2valve.
Well the time has come, with 226000 miles my truck dropped compression in at least one cylinder. I am debating what to replace it with. I will be doing the work myself so labor won't be a problem.
I have about $2000 to work with,
option 1- factory used with a good warranty
option 2- switch to a 3valve
option3 - navigator dohc swap
Have you done a compression test and a leak down test on the engine yet? What you think is an engine swap may be a simple and inexpensive repair.
As for the swap idea, either would bolt in but finding electronics to control the engine and transmission may be difficult. In my mind, I am not sure the gain would be worth the expense.
I have been chasing a miss for the last few months and did a compression test last week. Cylinder 7 was at 20psi, gave it a shot of oil and it jumped to 130. Didn't leak down at all.
retest that cylinder after running engine for 10 minutes (HOT)...
could be just a stuck piston ring..
as for engine swap... keep with same type and year... unless you plan on going with aftermarket computer system.
fyi, back in the day.. I ran a straight 6 engine on 5 cylinders due to a cracked piston...
it drove for 2 more years. 1 year for me.. and 1 year for my little brother.
