One more clue: When it does run bad there is a clicking/popping sound like a exhaust leak or spark noise when you pull a plug wire. It is not there when running well so it is not likely a exhaust leak. Can't imagine where spark voltage would be leaking.

Get a spray bottle, and start spraying all the plug wires and distributor down.
