[I]I have a 2000 F250 Super duty 5.4L V8. I found this broken wire and have no idea what it is for. The broken wire is black feeding into a grey connector about 6 o'clock in the picture. The other side is across the loom of wires approximately 1 o'clock in the picture and feeds into a black box looking thing. This is all on the passenger side near the oil cap. Please help. Thanks
Take it to your local Ford dealer and ask the service department. My dealer has always been helpful. It is good to have a good relation with the local dealer.
The part has no bearing on engine operation. It's purpose is to suppress electrical noise that can cause radiated interference which would be most pronounced on AM radio reception. If you don't listen to AM radio, you really don't have a functional need to repair it.
If it looks like it was cut on purpose, don't be surprised to find that it's shorted and a "quick fix" was done.
It's main function is to reduce "static" on the electrical system in the vehicle. (BTW, there should be 2 of them, one on each side.) While you can get by without it if you don't listen to AM radio, this static can reduce FM signal strength and can cause interference with electronic modules on the vehicle. It's definitely better if you replace it. After all, there's a reason it's installed in the engine compartment and not on the back of the radio.
