Get the codes read. Auto parts stores cannot read these codes, you need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
Mark, what is the maximum temp the trans can take? My gauge said 220 on a long hill tow the trans warning light flashed due to my spedo shorting out i believe. I took it to a shop and they said 220 is too hot but there was not a over heat code. my temp sending unit was also mounted near the trans cooler and radiator so it can be getting radiant heat from that too. I will be moving it to the trans pan.
There was no overheat code because 220°F is at the upper end of normal temperatures. You can run at 220°F all day long without hurting the trans.
Mounting the temp sender near the radiator and cooler makes it just about useless. Mount it in the test port on the driver's side of the trans to get useful information.
I don't know the max that the trans can take. I had one that ran hot enough to melt the solder out of the solenoids, and it still worked.
Solder melts at 450°F. Let that sink in for a while.
