I have a 1973 f100 column shift with a c4 trans. The rod that runs from steering column under the hood, to the transmission it's twisted and bent. And the bushing at column looks to be in a bind. I've been to the salvage yards. Each rod I bought was too short. Any suggestions on after market? Photos would be helpful. Thanks
According to the Ford parts catalog there is only one transmission shift rod for the 73 with a C4. This rod actually covers just about all applications.
Manual shift rod
Fits: 73-77 F100-350 2WD, all engines and FMX, C4 or C6 transmission
73-77 F250 4WD before s/n X80,001
18 21/32" long 7/16" diameter
Part number D3TZ-7326-A
The only other rod it shows for 2WD is the 78-79 F100-350 all engines all auto transmissions is P/N D8TZ-7326-A and its approx. 19.16" long.
EDIT:
Is this the original transmission? Is there a possibility that a different transmission has been installed and doesn't have the correct shift arm for truck applications?
Good morning. Thanks for you reply. My truck was stolen years ago. Motor and trans were both taken. So yes. As best as I can research my transmission is out of a car. According to trans shop. I'm going to use those part numbers and conduct a search. The shift rod I have looks like it's been twisted and bent. And I seem to destroy the bushing at column every time I force it in. I will post some photos of what I have .Thanks DB
If the transmission has been replaced with one from a passenger car then that's probably where your problem is. The shift arm on the side of the transmission is different between cars and trucks.
The part you need is D3TZ-7A256-A. That shift arm fits all 73-77 trucks with a C4. Unfortunately its a discontinued part and no dealer or obsolete parts supplier shows having one in stock.
