I have been doing a lot of reading on here in the last month or so and have devised somewhat of a plan for my 2001 7.3l 4x4 X. I pull a variety of trailers from a small enclosed trailer (4000#), boat (6000#), and camper (9-10k) as well as a few others of varies weights. The camper has a WDH that does a good job of leveling things out. I also drive fairly often when a group wants to go somewhere, although this is not my DD. My steering box went out and was replaced by a RedHead steering box. That helped a ton with the wander. Other than that, suspension and steering still stock.
Now for the plan:
-V/Modded B code springs, or equivalents from ATS
-30mm or Hellwig rear sway bar
-new front sway bushings (or is there a different bar to look at)
-new shocks and steering stabilizer (open to suggestions)
-new towing mirrors w/lights (I have towing mirrors now and have no complaints, but I hit the garage with one and busted it) (Trying to decide between pre and post 08)(Didn't think I would care about power extend, but today pulling an enclosed car trailer and forgot to pull mine out 3 different times)
-New headlights (probably 02 style)
Any comments?
I'm headed to Austin to pick up a donor X for body parts next week. I have already been to the gold mine and met Mike there (last month), so I might have to do some picking while I'm there.
After you get the new springs on be sure to get an alignment and insist on 5* of caster.
A good alignment shop will identify any worn out steering or drivetrain parts that need replacing and that with the caster set at the high end of factory spec your wander be rock steady straight as an arrow.
