jb666 what is your truck doing that you need to change the clutch? I bought one to change to try to fix the temp rising when I'm at an intersection for a while. Good tip wtroger. I happen to have a strap wrench and will try your method.
Autozone lists having the Ford tool for this on their free tool rental sheet (just need a deposit), but the Autozone's near me didn't have it.
I removed one of the pulley bolts from the water pump, and bolted a long box end wrench onto the pulley so I could hold it. Then I think it was a 1-1/4" wrench to turn the nut on the clutch. Worked out fairly well.
Don't believe the Zone. The wrench they have is 38mm (IIRC), and the nut on the clutch is closer to 35mm. All you'll do with that wrench is round off your nut.
When my fan clutch went ****-up during the Road Trip From Hell, I went to a quickie oil-change place that had a mechanic out back, and he got it off for me in less than a minute. Of course, he had a HUGE fan-clutch tool set...
Thanks for the inpuit folks..
I ended up grinding a 36 mm (Older year I6) clutch wrench that I could find, down to 40mm for the job.
byronbgs - It was completely loose when i spun the fan by hand, with a fair amount of forward-back movement. (1/4inch at least)
What really gave it away though, was the sound change in the truck.
