Now before you run it too much more...put that water pump I sent you on it.
As for the oil leak...I had the same thing happen to me. I didn't have the round gasket on the filter cover secure and flat. It told me the oil pump was working though!

The water pump is sitting in a prominent place in my shop, next project will be the cooling system!

Joe, here is a link to a thread with video on when I started up my 226 after it had been sitting for 48 years. Just like yours it took a few tries and kicked in smooth after a little bit.

And you run your 1949 Flathead for about 30 seconds without any coolant in the water jacket?
Would you expect to find damage?
