Just read on MCN, that a man driving a car in Amish country in Ohio, shot a 23 year old Amish youth. It appears that the youth and several others were hiding in a cornfield, and tossing rotten tomatoes at passing motorists. The man had supposedly stopped and warned the kids to stop it, but after the 2nd or 3rd trip of getting hit with the tomatoes, the guy stopped, pulled out a shotgun , and blasted in to the cornfield where they were hiding. The pellets killed the one 23 year old. It was reported by the Amish that the kids had been doing this for years, for fun, with rotten tomatoes and more recently, paint ball guns. The spokesperson for the Amish community said he could not believe anyone would go to this level of violence. No doubt this shooter had his moment of road rage, and at the WORST, should have just shot up in the air. I wonder why the other drivers that got "tomatoed" in the past, didnt call the law on these kids? it might have saved this kids life it someone had, imo

23 year old kids huh. Shame to see someone die but maybe both sides need to take a good look at themselfs. Justifably the man who did the shooting should be sent away for a long while but a stupid tomatoe has just ruin countless peoples lives.
I read that this morning - I find the Amish habit of "teasing the Englander" a little stupid, and can see how such a practice could incite violence. Had it have been my vehicle that paintguns were shot at, I would have had the sheriff out there pronto. The report showed that the man did not see the person he shot, so he needs to be executed for total stupidity, and clear up the gene pool. I can see this causing a bigger drift 'twixt the Amish, and Englander. (I know we ain't English, but the Amish call us all that.)
It is a sad world where 1) a 23 year old is classified a youth, or child. 2) where a culture will gain pleasure from hurling rotten tomatoes at passing cars, or shooting them with paint *****, and 3) where someone without thought will shoot into a cornfield he knows to contain children that he cannot see.
I hope this is resolved soon, and such **** practices are removed from the Amish fun calendar.
I really would be annoyed if some gormless idiot decided to paint ball my truck...
Theo--I was thinking the same thing. What in the ... is a 23 year old man throwing tomatoes at a car for? Was he a might touched in the head or something? Of course the guy with the shotgun handled the situation in a pretty mature manner as well.
I have a better question yet, to my way of thinking.
What on earth has gotten into the "Plain Folk" that they have allowed their youth to behave in any such manner? It doesn't fit what I know of them.
Granted I haven't spent time in or near such a community in person, nor do I know the practices and so on of these people except from a distance, but from what I have heard - the idea of Amish people (youths or NOT) harassing passers-by is kind of difficult to believe...
I expect there will be a considerable stir among them over this. I hope someone follows what all happens and documents it in some way.
Well said Greywolf, I am having a hard time myself understanding the allowance of this "fun" by what seems to be such a mild mannered culture. But, from what I've seen in people the last 20 years, the digital age of a person certainly does not guarantee the maturity or the intellectual level for that person. I too, feel there might be more to this sad event that what we are getting from the media right now. It could be interesting, IF we get FACTUAL, unbiased media reporting about it,
The Amish have paint-ball guns? I thought they still used flintlocks?
I have to say, that 23 yr old must have been very immature, what a childish thing to do. I only know of 13 yr olds that do things as stupid as that. Knowing them, they were probably making cropcircles in the corn field as well...
If I was on a jury I would find the person innocent that gave the 23 old "MAN" a good butt kicking for his pranks. But, to shotgun someone to death over a tomato throwing, that is 1st degree murder and the guy deserves death himself, imo.
In Revere, MA a few years ago a man got upset by having his car pelted by snowballs, so he got out and shot a young teenager (13?) to death.
I bet in both cases, the people throwing the stuff decided to make a stand and taunt the people instead of running away when the people stopped.
I am just happy no one took a shotgun to me for every immature and stupid thing I did. I just took my kicks in the behind or punches like a man, shut my mouth, and did not do it again.
Just a different world today. Ever see the movie "Nothing to lose" when the mother slaps her son. Then she slaps the other guy and he asks why and she says "because you're with him". Man, that cracks me up, that is the way it use to be.
I guess I am more concerned with the question of why a man would have so much anger and rage inside hom that he would shoot anyone over such a petty thing. This is quite a comment on our society in general.
It's really quite sad for all involved-- The 23 year old, the man, and their families.
I'm of mixed opinions on the matter. Shooting back is a bit much, but on the other hand our society is becoming less orderly, and a punk dying as an example to others is no tragedy.
I don't vandalise the property of others, therefore I am without compassion for those who do. I expect the vandals thought they were being cute, and would like to have seen the looks on their faces as they took incoming fire.
