About 8 months ago I had my front rotors replaced on my truck, removing the hub and all that happy stuff, and my mechanic who performed the service told me that the bearings in the front are wet bearings and don't need to be greased since its a solid axle.
For some reason I remembered that today, and I wanted to ask you guys if that is indeed true.
My follow up question, is what tools/special socket do I need for the hub assembly of my truck? I've been doing a lot of my own work lately, and I want to have everything I need if I need to disassemble the front.
That would be incorrect. I would double check all the work that he did to make sure it is done correctly. I don'r know why he would think they are wet bearings, you can tell there is supposed to be grease in them when you take them off. To remove the front hubs, you will need the four pronged socket to take the bearing nuts off. I can't remember which one it is off the top of my head. If you take the hubs off, you should also replace the seal in the hub that rides on the spindle. Hope this helps.
I appreciate it, I'll try to find that socket. This is the reason I'm doing my own work now if you couldnt tell. I'm gonna try to find a write up/DIY, but I just wanted to ask here since you guys are very informative and quick.
rear bearings are "wet" . fronts are greased. and you need the larger socket for the Dana 50-Dana 60 axle. the smaller one they will try giving you is for the Dana 44 and will not work.
Before I forget, can you guys recommend a repair manual for this truck? I'm pretty confident in my mechanical ability, but incase there is something I'm just stuck on I'm sure it would help. I'd like to find a good manual that covers everything from brakes/wheel hubs, to injectors and o rings. Just a quick search I see Helm seems to be a good buy.

OEM Ford manuals on Ebay. You might want a set of long punches.
