As long as you are getting headers, my suggestion would be to wait until you get the headers and do it all at once. That way you're only doing it one time and won't have to worry about the fit. Go with the mufflers instead of the glass packs. You'll get less restriction and a less raspy tone.
Umm... Well I am leaving for 5 months for the AirForce and if you look at my gallery my exhaust is not exactily legal... Its very loud and especialy with a 3 speed manual... So I want to do this befor I leave, and I wont be getting headers befor I get back prob after next year.... My engine mods are down to a minimum untill I get her looking better. (new paint job)
if you want great sound but not crazy loud, i highly recomend Magniflow. sounds awesome! i can't say that enough. i will put one on every furture car i own, they are great mufflers, striaght through performance, perfict sound, and best warranty out there. i think i said this before but trust me, they are great. i tihnk going from headers into one pipe would be the best, much cleaner simpler set up and deeper sound and should flow more than enough.
I will second the comments re Magnaflow. http://www.magnaflow.com/
I have one on a 91 Exploder w/4.0L and it sounds sweet, very nice rumble. I am considering them for my 78.
...I went with large truck muffler 3in/out , all welded, nice throaty tone but not as loud as flowmasters, has just the right freq to setup off my nieghbors car alarm. Very reasonably priced
I'm having a performance specialist do my exhaust and here is what he recommended. 2 1/2" dual pipe with cross over, I'm adding collector "Y" with dumps for the strip. Flowmaster 50 series with the exhaust behind the rear wheel and pointed down to keep from making a mess on the side of the wife's car when I start it in the winter.
This should handle 425hp and I hope have a nice sound without rattling the screws out of the interior trim. I am leary of dumping the exhaust out in front of the wheel. You might hear one side mostly in the truck. I also am paranoid about blowing an engine going throught the traps and spewing oil and water on the rear tires.
I'll know how it sounds tomorrow night.
I'm not paranoid. Those guy's really are after me!
LOL, yeah, I hear ya on geting the wifes car dirty with the exhaust.... But that is how its set up now and I love it, also I dont think I can go straight out the back because I have no way to protect my gas tank from heat. Since I dont have my spare tire mounted under it anymore... Any ideas if I do decide to go straight out the rear? Maybe some heat wrap and high temp paint ?
Well mine angle down and out now behind the wheel. Tomorrow they should angle mostly down and a little out. I have the big tank and don't seem to have a problem.
Hmm... Ok, I made up my mind, I will go with 3" pipes, (have to ) go with flowmaster because thats the brand my exhaust guy carrys and I like the flow and tone. I will just have to figure out if I want to go straight out the back or out the side when I get ther... I guess I could branch it off in front of my rear tires and cap it ? That would make it look like a drag truck!! lol... HMMM
Flowmasters patent ran out, now there is a copy-cat muffler called V-force (carried by most muffler shops around here) Sounds / looks EXACTLY like Flowmaster 40 series, but half the cost.
I have full length headers, 3" dual exhast out the back with these mufflers. Sounds like a NASCAR- wow, what a sound. Kind of a steel type sound, but real deep, with the lopey cam I can't say enough for the sound of these mufflers. I've had dynomax, thrush, glasspacks, generic super turbos and nothing sounds similar.
Well I got mine back from the shop and I like it a lot. A little louder than the midas turbos. Louder yet when you get on it, but pretty nice sound with no harmonics. All in all a great sound without being obnoxious.
