F1 hinge pins R & R

Good afternoon FTE family!

After a search on pin removal/replacement I thought I would start a new thread to get opinions on procedures. I would like to have the goose neck hinge mounted mirrors.
I thought it might be good to have advice on prepping the mirror mount as I understand they do not fit well.
Do you have a temporary pin until the door is painted?
Are the "heads" of the pins painted on the lower hinge and the upper is not painted, because it needs to be installed after paint?
Is that hinge pin stainless?
I like to have an end game in mind....
I have learned so much from you all, and look forward to your input again!

Best regards,

Doc

I assume that you mean this type of mirror?

The mirror head and the pins are stainless but the bracket is chrome over pot metal. Be careful that you don't push too hard on the mirror bracket before tightening the set screw or over tighten the set screw or you will break the bracket.

Those hinge pins can be a bear to remove. I had to take my upper hinges off to get them out. The pins are splined at the top and collect rust so they really can be tight. If you do a search of this forum you will see lots of different suggestions, tools and solutions. I finally had to drill mine down through the head past the splined section.

Start putting PB Blaster on those pins now and soak them everyday. Use the removal tool and remember they are splined and tapered only come out the top.

What an awful job to remove those pins. Working on my 1952 F3, just today I spent 2 hours to remove one of those suckers. Penetrant oil, hammer and center pin, and heat... Still have 3 to go. Bad luck for me that mine are hardened steel, so impossible to drill thru...

Lower hinge, driver side... done

Upper hinge, driver side... waiting to gooooo!

Use cobalt drills. Are you removing the lower hinge pins? Why?

THanks for the tip. Since I have to install new mirrors (same like yours posted), if new pin (stainless steel) goes into upper hinge, gotta update lower hinge too... that`s the reason...

I did not have to do the lower pins as there was no movement between the hinge halves.

Finally got both pins out... Gotta reckon that the best method is to drill the top of the hinge pin and then push it all the way down... in just 15mins got it done. Hammer is required of course... as penetrating oil to help. Thank God I decided to do this before final coating... I messed up the primer real bad so I gotta fix it, but it will be easier this way...

First mark the head with a sharp center pin tool to help center the drill bits, then used a 4mm drill bit and after that 6mm drill bit, carefully not moving away from pin center axis... piece of cake!

I stole this pic from the web to illustrate the new pins I intend to install. Stainless steel...

Here is a pic of my hinge and a little flat spot I had to grind in the hinge so to fit the mirror also ground out a small ridge in the mirror bracket

Doesn't show that good on this one
H

This side I ground out a lot more
The hole were not correct or the ears on the mirror were not extended far enough

I hope it doesn't break or rust

Thanks guys,

So, once the old pin is out and the bracket fit to the hinge, is it then time to paint everything and then install upper pin permanently?

Thanks,
Doc

In my planning that is the route. I wlll paint the door off the cab and install it back after painted...

New upper pin

Hinge grinded for the mirror. Holes are offset about 1/8" (3mm). Supplier should revise the design...

Thanks John! And all of the rest of you! Until I map all these steps out-I feel lost!.
About to go out to weld up a few "wallowed out' hole in th frame for the cab mounts and other minor damage, grin it all up and then sandblast and paint!
