Ive searched, and gone back through my computer history and can't find it. I have seen a thread here which Mark contributed too which said what the max temps were and for how long etc. I know book is 230 and optimum is around 165 but there was some degree of play in that. Can anyone hook me up?
There was more on it somewhere but this pretty much covers what you need to know.

If you need to cool the trans idle or fast idle in park or neutral. DO NOT shut the engine off when the trans is that hot.

Your post made me realize I should take the info from Mark that I post in threads like this and include it in the tech folder, so I made a thread just now for easier linking.

Awesome! That thread's in the Excursion forum, can you put it in our tech folder too?

The 7.3L tech folder here has been "under renovation" for quite some time (years), even though I've had a couple of the brotherhood guys chip in and help me out. Unfortunately, I am my own worst enemy and in order for me to finish it, my method needs a lot of quiet time so I can concentrate and right now I'm lacking both components. And with how things are at present (family health), it's gonna be a bit before the tech folder here gets finished.
A lot of the stuff that crosses over from the Excursion tech folder has already been migrated over, but it's the other stuff I have to get coded for the format I like to use.
I believe in the same thread he said the stock transmission sensor is as accurate a measurement as you can get especially if you can access it with a reader.
