262 I 6 Distributor Question/Help

New to this site and I am looking for a distributor for a I 6 262 Ford engine that we just rebuilt BUT it did not come with a distributor

Where to buy one ?

Is there a part number that I could research?

Does anybody have one they want to sell ?

Thanks for your help

I'm wondering if those originally shipped with a loadomatic (vacuum only) type distributor. You probably don't want one of those.

Could the Lodomatic dist be converted to a centrificle advance , would there be parts from another dist that could be converted?

Right now anything would help with the progress of this restoration

Hang on. I know it's been almost 20 minutes, but somebody will be along eventually that knows what they are talking about...

Another thing you might consider doing is have one of the distributor guys do the work for you, if you're not big into machine work. It's not rocket science but the dimensions are important. And they could setup the advance curve for you. Maybe a loadomatic can be converted without too many contortions. I'd contact Faron Rhoads out in PA. He does a lot of Ford stuff, or Bubba down in Indiana. I'm sure there are others.

Just thought of car-part.com. Did a quick search and these folks say they have one.

I've got a remanufactured 1964 262 distributor with a 0.530" shaft in my parts collection. I could probably be persuaded to part with it if you can't find another source.

Thank You very much Jim for the offer.

I think a gear would be a better option, as we have located a 223 dist with a 0.491" shaft and small hex drive
With your dist shaft the housing on a 223 would have to be bored to fit the shaft correct

I just re read your post and it is a comp dist and not just the shaft !

Thanks for the help with the Ford!
I do not usually get involved with Fords but this is a good friends project

I made contact with him and he sent me to his brother, and he said he had one, and "said" it was for a 262, he seemed to know the difference!

We have located a 232 distributor.
No such thing as a 232 I-6, it's probably a 223 I-6.
Your 'About Me' profile says 1961 F150. There were no F150's until 1975.

If your truck is a 1961, it did not come with a 262 originally (unless it was a DSO), the only I-6 available was the 223 that was standard equipment.

The 223 and 262 I-6's look almost identical, it takes a trained eye to look at these two I-6's to know which parts are 262 only.

262 was an option, installed in 1961/64 C550/600 (C Series Tilt Cabs) & F600; 1963/64 F100/250 & N500, but might have been a Domestic Special Order (DSO) for 1961/62 F100/250's.

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code: 1961/64: B = 262 I-6; J = 223 I-6.

Thanks for the reply
Actually the truck this engine is going into is a 55 with the 223

I wish we would have known that BEFORE we rebuilt the block we had!
Right, they look the same UNTIL you you change the cam chain with a gear and find out your distributor does/will not work!!

That leads us on a nationwide search for a distributor for a 262!
I guess we could have had the old cam re ground or ????
The help I have received in this site has been VERY heloful

THANKS FOLKS !!

1954/64: 223 I-6 was standard equipment, 262 I-6 introduced in 1961, was an option for some 1961/64 trucks.

223 has a timing chain, 262 is "gear to gear."

223 uses a different camshaft than a 262 and there were several different 262 camshafts.

Why would you want a 262 when the 223 was the original engine? 262: Some parts are very hard to find.
