I do think Ford is doing much better. I owned 3 Ford vehicles in the late 80's, early 90's and was generally pleased with them, from a QC standpoint. I bought a V8 Thunderbird in '95 that was OK but had issues. I then bought a Bullitt Edition Mustang in '01 and the quality was truly laughable. Bought the car from a dealer 2.5 hours away and when they delivered it, trim pieces were in the floor. The tranny leaked a drop/day from day one and it was never fixed. Seat leather peeled on driver bolster with less than 1K miles, transmission had crunch between 1st & 2nd (common fault) and engine had noticeable "piston slap" (also common fault).....plus, I literally scratched the speedo lens with a diaper...
I went to Toyota for all my vehicles, (no, Toyotas are not perfect but damn close in terms of reliability), until I bought a '15 Mustang GT that I have been very happy with.
I traded a '12 Tundra Limited 4x4, that gave me zero issues in 75K miles for a '17 F250 CC Lariat FX4 6.2 and very pleased, so far. Will see how it holds up over the next few years as I hope to keep it a long time.
i put 235k miles on my '03 Escape with nearly zero issues (none major).
I've got an '89 F250 with 150k miles and it has done OK for me. didn't buy it new, so I don't know its full history.
I've got a '16 Escape with 25k miles and I haven't had any issues with it either. I'm not thrilled with how the CVT trans works, but it does work.
Had a '79 Cougar with electrical gremlins that never got resolved. Something heat related. Can't recall the number of times it just died on me - complete shutdown. I'd just have to wait for it to cool down then it would be fine.
Ford's ACTUAL quality has been quite good for a number of years. They have not fared as well recently because of complaints about their Sync system; not actual quality failures. Now that they have made changes to Sync, their ratings are back up. Actual quality? Has been good for years.

I'm actually pretty impressed with Sync 3. It seems well thought out.
One thing really irritating though is the passenger can't enter an address for GPS routing. you'd think since the damn car can sense someone in the passenger seat that it would unlock the ability to use some features while in motion.
Even more remarkable (page 4 of the report) is how many brands ranked higher than Toyota and Lexus (which now straddle the industry average) and that Honda and Acura are below average. Who'd have thought we'd ever see that?

I noticed that too. And look at the #1, "KIA" which just a few short years ago stood for "killed in action". Who'd a thought... Ford, Ram and Chevy in the top 10 for quality.

Interesting read as well in that Chevrolet ranked higher than Honda in dependability. Another one of those things I never thought I'd see.
When you look at the charts in both of these reports, it really highlights how far all companies have come in quality and dependability. It's almost not a differentiator anymore (well except maybe for Fiat)

Wait what? you can't input a destination while the vehicle is in motion? What the heck good is that? My wife is the navigator and in order to avoid storms, ice and bad weather, she has to use the gps to relay place to place for destinations across country when we are winter towing, as the gps usually takes us through a direction we don't want to go in the middle of winter. Is this true for the voice nav as well? How about waypoints, such as if we are looking for a stopover at night like a wall mart or freeway rest stop? We have an Alpine Nav in our truck now and it doesn't have any such restrictions. Now I am having second thoughts about ordering a 2017..

Most, if not all, factory GPS systems these days don't allow you to do much with the screen while moving. You can search for a destination using the voice feature...but my experience is that it's hit or miss. You can use the screen to load a new destination or waypoint as long as it's stored as one of your favorites.
I believe you can get around most of the restrictions by using Android Auto and Google maps if you've got an Android phone (and Waze Beta on AA is moving along and should be released soon).
the voice recognition for the Sync 3 is pretty bad from what I've experienced so far. As bridge noted, that is an option while in motion but the last time I tried to use it, the system couldn't understand well enough to be useful.
I've resolved not to ever get factory GPS again. One of the features I miss the most when using my Sync 3 GPS is the ability to look up a route on a PC then send it to my phone or tablet (as in how Google maps works). I haven't paid too much attention yet to what Google has done with Waze and if what I just noted is possible, but I have heard good things in general about Waze.
edit: I should note that I'm speaking clearly Siri understands me just fine
