Swapped my T18 to a ZF, 4.9, 2wd, long bed, reg cab. This included new (Ford parts only) clutch, pilot bearing, slave cylinder and custom made u joints (front is a step joint)and driveshaft. When the engine is at 1000 RPM under load a grinding/creaking/rumble is heard. This is only at 1000 rpm in any gear, not above or below. It sounds like it is in the clutch (springs in the clutch plate due to the torque of the engine?) but it could be fron the tranny (it really doesn't sound like it). Any ideas are welcome.
Where did you find the ZF? That one is better than the Mazda 5sp. ain't it? I was thinking about swapping mine too. I have the Mazda.
I also have a new clutch that ain't right and I am not sure exactly why so it looks like I am going back in it.
Good luck
Bought the ZF out of a tranny shop in OR. Cost $$$ but worth it. 12 month unlimited mileage warranty. I am planning on having the truck for a long time so the cost is really not that much of a factor.
I talked to a lot of people and read a lot of posts before deciding which tranny to change to. After installing the ZF and driving an F150 with the Mazda tranny I am glad I went with a ZF. A neighbors son who is a Ford mechanic and changed his F150 from 2wd to 4 wd did not understand why I went with the ZF. After he drove his for a few months and then drove mine told me he wished he went with the ZF even though it is more expensive.
