Daily Driver?

Hello, I got a 19789 Ford Ranger XLT with a 6.6L engine in it and it's an automatic. I really like my truck and it is the first one I have owned but I want to be able to go on the highway with it and it be smoother than it is now but I don't know how to get there. Anyone have any ideas on how to make my truck a nice daily driver and able to go 60 maybe 70 nicely?

Overdrive. Whether in the transmission, or outside of it.

Tight steering and suspension. These old trucks like to wander. I would look into replacing all your bushings and worn out parts like the tie rod ends and tighten up your gear box. Also run through the brakes. Highway speeds in the 70s was 55mph. There is a pretty big braking distance between 55 and 70. Remember, these trucks are basically bricks, meaning big heavy and no aerodynamics so mpg is going to suck. And of course, what meangreen92 said.

Do not mess with that nut! It only sets the sector shaft's preload. Over tighten it, the box could lock up. Backing the nut off after this occurs, may not solve the problem.

Also run through the brakes.

When 'Tricky Dick' was prez, after the first Arab Oil Embargo (1973/74) ended, he mandated that all vehicles could drive no more than the double nickel (55 MPH) on highways. turnpikes, freeways.

How long did Tricky Dick's mandated 55 MPH speed limit last? Longer than he did, he resigned from the presidency in August 1974.
