Somewhere here, I'm sure I saw a breakdown of what color modules were used in what years, and for what reasons - now I can't seem to find it. Does anybody have a listing of what should have been original to what vehicles?
What brought this on is I have one '79 4x4 that was switched to a 460 from the factory 400. I'm assuming the PO just plugged it in and it worked, but I'm not sure that it's "correct" - it failed recently, and I borrowed one off another '78 4x4, which was originally a 351M, and now has (I think) a 400 and a different cam. I believe that the '79 had a blue grommet, and I don't remember offhand what was on the '78, but it runs on both pickups. I'm trying to figure out which one is most correct for the RV cam/4 barrel 400, and what would work the best on the 460 (I know it was never a factory option, so it's a guess). Thanks!!
Ignition modules, 74 (black grommet) and 75 (green grommet) are year specific and will not interchange. 76 to 79 (blue grommet) are interchangeable.
Ignition modules: 1974 is 1974 ONLY / 1975 is 1975 ONLY.
Blue module introduced in 1976 was used well into the 1990's. 1973-1974 ?? D4AZ-12A199-C
Green Sales in OH.
Collectors Auto Supply in WA.
Haven Ford in KS.
Klimesh Motor Sales in IA.
Bob Allen Ford in KS.
Freese Motor Inc in IA.
Wesley Obsolete Parts in KY.
Dennis Carpenter Ford in NC.
That makes sense - I think that's what my spare is, it will get thrown on and run. I remember brown, green, black, red, yellow, and I think a couple more, then DuraSpark I and II, then III, some were higher voltage, etc. I was thinking there was a chart somewhere, and I remember Jeep guys telling me about swapping (I think) to a I from a II got you a hotter spark, but I can't remember that stuff anymore. Thanks!
Ignition modules, 1974 (Black grommet); 1975 (Green grommet) are year specific and will not interchange.
1976/89 (blue grommet); 1977/79 some CA (Redgrommet); 1978/79 sold in hi altitudes (YelloworBrowngrommet).
Go with a blue quality replacement.
1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A & B; D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module - Blue Grommet (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford
Wesley Obsolete Parts (KY) is out of business. Collectors Auto Supply (WA) doesn't have much of anything, when you call, they say they have to check the "warehouse."
Guess what? Their "so-called warehouse" is Vintage Parts Inc. (WI). Vintage's parts are only listed on the Ford dealer parts locator system, that most members of the general public cannot access.
You, sir, are amazing - how you can remember that much detail is beyond me, I hope you know how much I appreciate it (this coming from a guy who forgets what he had for breakfast by 10AM). Any idea what was different with the "High Altitude" modules? Mine are all blue (had to go look, curious now), 3 originally sold in northern MT and 1 in Estevan, SK - not exactly high altitude, but +/- 4000' - wonder what a brown module would act like?
Also - it looks like a yellow grommet had a third plug - what was that for?

Awhile back, I called Green Sales to find out which 1978 or 1979 hi altitude module had a yellow grommet, which had a brown grommet.
The reason I called was because Ford replaced the original 1978 module with a 1979 module, parts catalogs do not list the grommet colors and Green Sales had both types.
So, which one is which? I don't know, because I've forgotten (sigh) so you'll have to call Green Sales and ask.
