2012 F150 Back Up Sensor Issue

Just hit 70,000 miles and went out of warranty. The issue is the Heads Up Display periodically shows "Check Back Up Sensor". When this occurs the sensors do not detect, and this doesn't happen all the time. I did clean the lens on each of them.
The dealer wants $115 to diagnose the problem. The parts cost $154 each from the dealer.
I did find sensors on Ebay for a fraction of that. But how do I troubleshoot this issue?

For what it is worth, I had the same exact issue. It turned out that two of the sensors had failed. Luckily I had mine done under warranty, but you could always try purchasing one and swapping it for an existing one and see if the issue disappears. Then you could just move it to a different position if the dash error occurs again. This might be a slow way of diagnosing, but you should be able to save the dealer time component. Then, if the new sensor has been in all four positions and the error persists, you would have to introduce a second new sensor into the mix and begin the process of elimination again. Hope this helps.
