steering box rebuild

How difficult is it to rebuild the steering box in a '54 F100?

Easy peasy with some basic tools. The new sector shaft bushings will need fitting to the sector shaft and the old worm gear will need to be pressed off the shaft and the new one pressed back on, unless you buy a shaft and gear assembly. Everything else is a cake walk.

Like said, it is a relatively easy job. Just make certain you understand each adjustment and the order in which the adjustments are made.

Bringing this back to the top again and adding a little here, I rebuilt mine and plan on packing it with corn head grease. But this thread made me realize I didn't pack the bearings with corn head grease like I normally would with a wheel bearing. Is that really necessary though with the steering gear bearings?

That stuff is runny enough that it will work its way right into the bearings very quickly.

I just got a quote of $$445.00 Canadian plus 5% and 6% Canadian taxes for a complete rebuild kit, our currency isn`t anything to cheer about.

I also got the kit from the Early Ford Store in CA , I think the price was the same about 5 years ago . Kit install is pretty straightforward but you may need a machine shop to ream the bushings and press the gear off and the new one on .
