Towing home from Charlotte two weeks ago. Northbound on I-81 north of Roanoke.
I-81 has been a PITA in recent years with all the truck traffic. Guess they are avoiding I-95. We've been going up that way since 1989 when the wife's sister moved to Frederick, Md. I usually haul a load of seafood and other misc. things up there once a year. This past Christmas was tough!!

I tow I-81 regularly. When I first started back in the early '90s 81 was a great drive. Little traffic and beautiful views up the Shenandoah Valley. 10 years ago it was I-95 that was choked with truck traffic.
However, a few years ago the major transportation distribution hubs began fleeing New York and New Jersey to escape the high costs and taxes. They moved west into Pennsylvania and down 81 into Maryland and the West Virginia Panhandle. If you drive 81 up through Pennsylvania and then 78 east toward NY/NJ you see hundreds of new warehouses and distribution centers. Because of this, the truck traffic heading south is shifting from 95 to 81. 95 is now much less congested (south of Richmond) and 81 is now really bad. I regularly tow 81 and its now common to find yourself stuck in long lines of traffic behind large groups of trucks using both lanes and only moving at 50 to 60 mph. Its really sad and really sucks. Holiday weekends are now so bad that I will look for alternate routes when possible.
Little one lane underpass next to my house. Not too long ago, it had a wooden bottom and no light. When it would rain hard, the creek would rise and float the floor.
Something to be said about block and steel bar joist. Meral building next door total loss, building across street almost demolished
