Constant Voltage Regulator, Overheating?

My temp and fuel gauges stopped working suddenly today. It's 117 degrees outside, and I don't know how hot under the dash... is it possible the CVR is overheating?

After a short (5 minute) shut down, I started it back up and they worked again for about a minute.

Everything is hot around here.

Nobody has any idea, eh?

After it "cooled down" for about 30-40 minutes yesterday, I went on my merry way and everything was fine and has been since.

I guess I'll just chock it up to a fluke and see if it ever happens again.

Is it possible the ICVR is overheating? After a short (5 minute) shut down, I started it back up and they worked again for about a minute.

Join the club, it's very hot here in LA LA Land too.
The ICVR affects the temp and fuel gauges and the oil pressure gauge (if present).

When the ICVR begins to fail, the needles of these gauges do the "hula" .. swing rapidly back/forth on their own.

When the ICVR fails, the needles don't move.

ICVR attaches to the backside of the printed circuit board. D1AZ-10804-A .. ICVR (Motorcraft GR-513) / Obsolete ~ Available NOS & from auto parts stores.

Interesting. They didn't swing around, just fell down to "zero". And actually the fuel gauge stayed slightly above empty. Around 1/8 tank.

Possibly related? The right turn signal was acting up as well. Or at least the indicator light was.

But like I said, once everything cooled off a little bit, it's all back to normal.

Interesting...Do you have a volt gauge in the dash, i.e. was charging voltage normal? If you're really curious you could try hitting the VR with freeze spray the next time it acts up. Might be tough to do, but "take one for the team". M'k?

My feeling is the printed circuit board on the back of the cluster. The plastic film of it heating up, warping from the heat, or cracking. Heat separating the crack. It's the only thing all your above have in common.

That's a possibility, I had the same thought. I guess we'll see if it happens again.

I think the Jeffster might win the prize on this. Try poking with a stick. (The board, not Jefffafa)

Sometimes after I start my truck, the gauges, as well as the turn signals, will not work. The fix for me is to jiggle the starter switch key. Then everything starts working again. I know it is the starter switch in my case. I have a new switch to replace it with but it has not been a priority to change it yet. Maybe the same as your situation?

Possible I suppose, I did try jiggling it while it happened. But it didn't do anything.

I wish it was just hot here. I could more easily deal with that. The main problem in my area is the stifling humidity. Feels like you're in a perpetual sauna. You don't even have to be doing anything for sweat to be dripping off of you. If you are doing anything, you're clothes will be drenched with sweat. Definitely my least favorite time of the year. I'm more of a fall weather type guy.
